Indian Woman
By Veena Gokhale
I dot my forehead
slip into a chudidar
dreamy against my skin
bare my belly in a sari
under my winter coat
in Toronto
South Asian Woman
presumed oppressed
(passivity optional)
At Pearson Airport
a blonde model
screams from the cover of `New Woman'
How about a make-over, baby?
Landing at Sahar Airport
I want to avoid
the lascivious stares
of men in uniform
and men without
But force myself to hold their gaze
I am liberated
Ain't I?
